Augustine Fou has compiled a list of what he calls the ten commandments of modern marketing at clickz.com

They are:

1. Thou shalt not target customers with messages they don’t want.
2. Thou shalt be truthful.
3. Thou shalt respect your customers.
4. Thou shalt make it easy for people to find you.
5. Thou shalt be useful.
6. Thou shalt make it easy for people to pass along.
7. Thou shalt measure and optimize.
8. Thou shalt listen to customers.
9. Thou shalt remove any organizational barriers to speedy, collaborative innovation.
10. Thou shalt not do brand-ing.

We tend to agree and would say you probably can’t go wrong if you follow them.

Less novelty. More quality.

Companies should focus on creating products that are ethical, sustainable and irresistible to consumers, instead of worrying about coming up with the next disruptive innovation, Umair Haque writes. The pursuit of innovation often devolves into the search for novelty, instead of creating something real, meaningful and valuable.

“The challenge of the 21st century isn’t entrepreneurial as much as it is creative: learning to create fundamentally better stuff in the first place,” he writes.

There has been a lot of talk this year about online retailer Zappos.com, especially since Amazon recently paid $US928 million for the company.

Zappos has developed a reputation for their extraordinary customer service and company culture. This post by CEO Tony Hsieh describes the Zappos approach, and should be of interest to pretty much anyone who’s involved with brand management or brand development, or in fact anyone involved in building and managing a business today.

Check out Tony Hsieh’s blog post “Your Culture Is Your Brand”.

Also check out Zappos’ core values as they give a great insight into the the whole Zappos culture, brand and business.

Zappos is also rather good at using storytelling to deliver their brand message through almost exclusively word of mouth marketing. Oh, and we’re definitely nicking “be humble” as a core value for Bikini too. Inspiring stuff!

Marketers, Management and the Mind

Interesting article by Al Ries on left and right brain thinking in business.

Your brain is divided into two completely separate hemispheres. Each hemisphere processes information differently. Your left hemisphere processes information in series. It thinks in language. It works linearly and methodically. Your right hemisphere processes information in parallel. It thinks in mental images. It “sees” the big picture.

One side of your brain or the other is dominant. In itself, that should not be surprising, since it’s consistent with another well-known human trait: Some people are left-handed and some people are right-handed. In a similar fashion, some people are left brainers and some people are right brainers.
